About WAFORD

WAFORD (Writers of African Origin in the Diaspora) is a recognized nonprofit cultural and literary organization, established as the official diaspora arm of the Pan African Writers’ Association (PAWA)—the continent’s oldest and most respected literary institution. Rooted in the shared mission of unifying African voices and preserving literary heritage, WAFORD stands as a creative and intellectual bridge connecting African writers across global borders.

In alignment with PAWA’s founding mandate—supported by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and UNESCO in 1989—WAFORD operates at the intersection of artistic expression, cultural advocacy, and institutional legitimacy. It represents a bold response to the evolving landscape of African literature, where digital platforms, diaspora collectives, and regional networks continue to shape new modes of storytelling and knowledge exchange.

WAFORD champions literary excellence and Pan-African cultural identity by:

🔹 Promoting African and diaspora literary, poetic, and artistic expression

🔹 Curating cultural nights, public readings, and visual art exhibitions

🔹 Facilitating the preservation and publication of African-authored work

🔹 Mentoring emerging diaspora creators through residencies and workshops

🔹 Advocating for African literature in public libraries and educational institutions

🔹 Building global bridges that connect African voices to world audiences

🔹 Hosting a WAFORD Publishing Press, quarterly peer-reviewed journals, and creative anthologies

🔹 Organizing book launch events to spotlight African authors and amplify global reach

Positioned within a federated network of Pan-African literary movements—including Jalada Africa, African Writers Trust, Writivism, and others—WAFORD affirms a shared vision of narrative sovereignty, cultural integrity, and literary justice.

Through thought leadership, cross-border collaboration, and a commitment to mentoring the next generation, WAFORD carries forward PAWA’s legacy—empowering African writers everywhere to reclaim space, shape discourse, and illuminate the world with stories that matter.
